Hello my name is Donna. I am a mother of nine year old with Aspergers. Let me tell you a little about my son Daniel. Daniel was born October 1, 1999, weighing in at 7 pounds 11 ounces. He was a healthy baby. Meeting his goals at an early age. When he was two we noticed that he was not talking. We took him to the doctor, who suggested that we enroll him in early intervention. This started our long journey. At age five Daniel was diagnosed with having ADHD, but we saw more problems with Daniel than just the ADHD. We had the autism specialist visit with us, and we were told that Daniel did not have autism(he did not meet the protocol). When Daniel enterd the second grade, our family physician suggested that we take Daniel to Dorenbechers children's hospital in Portland Oregon, to their autism clinic. We were told by the experts that Daniel was not autistic, but mentally retarded. We were devestated by the news. We took the reports back to our doctor, teachers, aides that work with Daniel, and even the autism specialist. Just this year at the beginning of the school year. Daniel was tested once again.
Last Thursday we found that Daniel has Aspergers. I am so relieved that a 7 year journey has finally come to an end. I know that there is a new road for us to travel down.
Daniel partcipates in Special Olympics, where he placed third at regionals, bringing home a bronze medal, and an opportunity to go to state. He is also in Royal Rangers(a christian based scouting group). Just this last Sunday, he earned his White Falcon badge.
