2 1/2 year old with exceptional memory

Hello, I am new to this board and my son was diagnosed with Autism about a month ago. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this experience...I have been working on his numbers with him with flash cards and such, and then the other day, he saw some letters hanging on the wall and just started calling them out, so I showed him some alphabet cards and he knew every letter...Now he has only been speaking for a couple of weeks so his words aren't very clear, but his letters and numbers are, he repeats almost anything I say but rarely initiates anything...Anyway I thought I would try some flash cards with basic words on them, no pictures, and he was able to read them, at first I thought I was crazy, like maybe I was just hearing what I wanted to, b/c again hes not very clear, but I've kept trying and sure enough he can read most of the ones I have, and it kind of freaks me out a little (not in a bad way)... Has anyone else ever heard of this or experienced it? Just looking for some feedback, if anyone can help...

Re: 2 1/2 year old with exceptional memory

Hello,
Yes, what you describe is very common. Same thing happened with our son at around the same age. He was actually displaying remarkable rote memory skills before we even suspected autism spectrum disorder....so at first, we thought we had a genius on our hands!! Of course, we still think he is....he is 5 1/2 now and just loves animals. He has all the species memorized and can identify even the strangest of animals that I cannot even pronounce!

TO answer your questions, no one knows why autistic indviduals display exceptional memory. There are theories out there, but no concrete evidence as to why. Here is a link to read on the subject:

Thanks for the response, and the link, interesting. His OT therapist has actually mentioned Aspergers, but said that won't be able to be diagnosed until he's much older...I appreciate the feedback.
