augmentative communication

Hello,
As an SLP I am interested in how many parents are considering computer based devices for children who are having difficulty acquiring spoken language.
Thank you,
Julie

My son, who is 9, and non-verbal had a dynavox but he became so violent he broke it and honestly he was using it like a toy. He now has a pecs book, he is doing much better with that but we still have to work on him using it when he gets upset.

My step-son was asked if he wanted to use the Alphatalker and of course his answer was no. The Therpist from the school then discharged him, stating he was not interested in the therpy.
How can they take the word of a 15yr old who has never been expected to communicate before? That's my question.

Hi my son is also 9 and non-verbal - we have tried many things and found the most success with basics like PECS and keyword signing. We are also using other principles which apply to PECS like nodding his head and shaking it for no and he has started to build on this and now uses those words as well . good luck!
