Help with head banging
      #796 - 08/16/08 04:52 PM

I have a 5 yr old son with Autsim. Last night we were in the ER. They were doing cat scans sure that this time he had 1-2 skull fractures and broken facial bones because his face & head look like he's been hit with a baseball bat. Luckily (if you can call it that) it is all soft tissue and muscle damage. They said they would not recommend drugging him but did not give me any other options or answers....I'm really scared..I cannot figure out the trigger and he is just steadily getting worse. 4riley

We never use drugs only fish oil for the brain and evening primrose for our sons asthma. My daughter does a massage technique called craniosacral. This technique is suppose to release mental pressure and hundreds of parents with autistic children swear by it for a solution to the head banging. Our son use to band his head. We would grab him up and massage his head. Little did we know there was a name for it. There's more to it. Look around and call. Talk to a personal massage therapist.

I agree that there may be some sensory over-sensitivity going on, whether it's visual, auditory etc..can be determined by an accurate funtional analysis. Massage therapy may help your son or it may not. That in itself will most likely not give you the function of the behavior. How does your son communicate? I have had student's who have banged their heads in an attempt to relieve a head ache because they couldn't communicate the need for relief to us. Anyway, I would recommend first a functional behavioral analysis so that a behavior support plan can be implement to spcifically address this behavior. It's without question, to the point where it's now a medical/safety issue that could lead to traumatic brain injury.
