A friend with autism?
      #823 - 10/13/08 07:51 AM

When I was 13, I moved w/ my parents to a new city, and I met a friend. He was a few years older than me and shy but other than that, nothing out of the ordinary. We were friends throughout all of high school and dated off and on. As I said, he was shy, so we never made much progression in the dating area, and eventually I met someone else after high school and we are still together now. During the last 7-8 years I have lost contact w/ my old friend from high school. Well, thanks to facebook we have started to talk again, just as friends.

However, he said his parents have told him he has autism. He said his parents never told him growing up because they didn't want him to treat himself differently. I don't think I ever saw any signs of autism, but I don't really know what they are.

I know that there are different levels of autism. But, would it really be possible for my to have hung out with him and semi dated him for 5 years and to have not noticed. It doesn't bother me if he was, but he has made an odd request to me, and I want to make sure I am doing the right thing for him before I try to help him.

Thanks.

I think it quite possible myself. he could have a very mild form of autism. I met a girl at camp last summer, we became best friends and still are. Now, I never realized it, but her mom was talking to mine and she found out my friend had autism. when my mother told me, I had no idea. I figure it's some form of Asperger's or PDD-NOS, but I'm not really sure. either way, she's still my friend.
OH, and if you look at what the signs of autism are, you might see it in him. I couldn't see it in my friend until I actualy took a good look at the facts. They're all on this website somewhere.
Hope this helps.
