Debbie, I hope you read this before you decide to move. Last year we moved to Park City. Absolutely LOVED it except...... for the special education. Do you know that Utah has the lowest dollar per pupil ratio in the nation. We just moved back to NJ in September after being there for one year. They CANNOT provide the services comparable to California or NJ. It was a truly heartbreaking decision to move from our beautiful home and neighborhood. WE were living our dream. But my son was spiraling downward. They don't have the funding. They cut our services by 75% percent when we moved there. It broke our hearts to leave and broke are hearts to stay. They broke laws but there are zer attorneys that work for the special needs in UTAH. I kid you not. Our advice was to find a lawyer in California. We were even comitted to hiring someone to come to our house a few times a week to do some verbal ABA and extra therapy. But there was no one who could do these services. Also here's one for the books... Last summer I called the Divsion of Disabilites to see what programs or monies they could offer for my son. In NJ and in Cali I'm they give you some monies if you qualify to help pay for for out of pocket expenses etc.. The woman there laughed and said"can you move back to NJ?" She said that she often tells families coming from other states to stay where they are because the services and monies available to the special needs aren't there. I couldn't believe my ears!! The actual woman who worked for the DDD told me that. I cried my eyes out when we had to leave but the rest of my son's life depended on this decision. He was in a classroom with 25 other students half of whom were English as a second languag with an aide to help all the children. My son would have drowned. I shudder to think of the lack of progression this school year would entail. Don't get me wrong the staff and everyone was great but NOT ENOUGH SUPPORT! If you want more detail I can give them to you. But I'm telling you they WILL cut your services and the classrooms will be overcrowded. We researched every possible way under the sun to stay but in the end this was the only decision we could live with. He is now in a public school in NJ in a self-contained class room in which he goes to the typical Kindergarten for specials etc. And can you believe this he has his OWN aide for the whole day. Needless to say he is doing a lot better. Don't get me wrong NJ is ugly and I crave the mountains and everything Park City is but -this is the right decision. Hope this helps you.
