Videos and visuals are an incredibly powerful tool for conveying information and raising awareness, particularly when dealing with autism. Underscoring this point, the Autism Society of Florida has released a PSA giving an overview on some shocking autism statistics that many people, even within the autism community, may not be aware of:

• 1 in 59 are affected
• 160 times more likely to drown
• 7 times are more likely to die by suicide
• 63% are more likely to be bullied
• 85% are unemployed
• 48% wander from safety
• 70% spend most of their day in a separate classroom
• 8,650 children have been restrained in Florida schools in 2019 alone
• 55% increase in child Baker Acts since 2010
• 20% have a run-in with police by age 21

While these figures paint a grim pictures for individuals with autism, the Autism Society of Florida proceeds to highlight services and support that are provided to help counter these stats and how they and others are making a difference.

For over 28 years, the organization has been improving the lives of individuals with autism, supporting their families, and educating communities across the state. They work to empower people across the spectrum and lifespan to make unique contributions to their family, community, and society. The organization is comprised entirely of volunteers, mostly parents and people with autism. For more info, visit https://www.autismfl.org.
