Netflix To Premiere Two Autism-Related Documentaries in July
With the recent halt to Hollywood film productions and a collapse of the traditional movie theater experience due to COVID-19, Netflix has emerged as the big winner among the various stay-at-home media companies. Fresh off its success from the wildly popular “Tiger King,” Netflix is now set to premiere two separate autism-themed documentaries in July. “Love On the Spectrum” and “The Speed Cubers” will cover vastly different topics but both feature individuals with autism.
“Love on the Spectrum” will take the reality TV dating genre to a whole new level by following seven young adults with autism and other developmental disorders as they venture into dating for the first time. According to Netflix, the five-part series will provide the “practical skills to help them navigate what can be a confusing experience for anyone, giving them the confidence to begin their journey on the road to finding love.” It added, “This uplifting and insightful series celebrates diversity and difference, with participants who are warm, funny and generously open. It sets out to teach us all lessons of love, romance, intimacy and acceptance.”
“The Speed Cubers” will follow two young Rubik’s Cube-solving champions Max Park and Feliks Zemdegs. Park, who has autism, is a California native and has traded wins and world records with his rival, Zemdegs. The competitive relationship has blossomed into a tender, yet complicated friendship and this heartfelt documentary captures the extraordinary twists and turns of both of their journeys as they seek to win another World Championship. It will also highlight the paradox of these two competitors simultaneously being both friends and rivals.
“Love on the Spectrum” airs on July 22, 2020, while “The Speed Cubers” will air on July 29, 2020.
Based on the trailers, both documentaries look incredibly intriguing and should be very encouraging for families of individuals with autism.
While this is not Netflix’s first time addressing the subject of autism, it’s great to see additional autism-related programming being added to its original programming catalogue.
